Flipped Classroom

6th Grade Math

Kurt Eulau & Priyanka Katumuluwa

Problem Identified: We noticed that while some students were completing their homework and came to class prepared that many other students did not.

Hypothesis: If we create and maintain sign up sheets for students to complete flipped classroom homework at lunch and/or after school, then homework completion rates will increase as measured by our homework tracker.

Data Collection: See Weekly Homework Tracker

  • Data is logged daily by hand on a paper tracker

  • Weekly data logged in Google Sheets tracker to record homework that was complete, incomplete, or not submitted

  • Graphs compiled below each week for visual representation of data

  • On Mondays and Fridays, daily paper tracker is combined with lunch sign in sheet. Students who do not turn in a packet on Monday, or have any day incomplete by Friday are written onto the sign in sheet by a teacher, and given a lunch pass. Students return pass and sign in when they arrive to complete their work. Students who do not attend are marked as absent and phone calls have been made for students who are continually not submitting work.

Actionable Steps:

  • In order to use this tool in the classroom, you need to create a manageable system for checking work and for ensuring that students follow through when given a pass to complete work

  • Identify which teacher will be responsible for monitoring each task (i.e. checking work daily, logging work in digital tracker, monitoring students at lunch/after school)

  • Clarify and communicate openly with students about the options that are available to them and the purpose for ensuring their work is completed

Overall Findings/Impact:

  • To simplify our analysis, we have only included data for 601. At the beginning of the inquiry cycle only 20% of students complete their flipped classroom homework in week 1. By week 6, 60% of students in 601 submitted their homework. Similar increases were demonstrated in other classes.

  • Overall, we found that the lunch sign up sheets were effective in increasing work completion. Students understood that their work was monitored and that it was their responsibility to ensure their learning happened whether it was in school or out of school. They were clear on the fact that it was their job to use the time provided for them in school to complete work if they were unable to regularly complete practice at home.

  • We will continue to use the sign up sheets and trackers in order to shift the primary responsibility of homework completion onto students rather than teachers.
