Google Classroom

6th Grade ELA

Annamarie Scavarda

Problem Identified: Students didn’t have a specific homework/assignment/projects folder for ELA so they would lose their homework sheets/classwork sheets. Also students who are absent frequently would need to catch up on the work that they missed.

Hypothesis: If I use google classroom for class activities and notifying the students about assignments, projects, homework etc. they will be able to have all of their assignments in one place so they/I can reference them at any time. As measured by assignments/classwork posted on google classroom.

Data Collection: My data collection is based on student feedback.

  • Many students reported that using google classroom was helpful for them because they could complete their homework digitally if they didn’t have post its when reading at home.

  • Other students reported that using google classroom was helpful because they had easy access to read-alouds that we had done in class, so they could refer to them while completing the work that correlated with the read aloud.

Actionable Step: Using your MS442 email you will go to google classroom and open an account and then create the classes that you have, I used 601, 602, 603 and Intensives. If you would like to keep track of whole group class work then this is the best way to set up google classroom. There are other ways that you can utilize google classroom.

Overall Findings/Impact:

  • Positives: The students were very familiar with using google classroom so the set up was fairly quick and easy. They enjoyed using the computers to work on and complete in class assignments. Google classroom made it easy to create small groups for students who had missed a day/two of work and helped them catch up. Students reported that it was easy for them to do the homework digitally. It made it easier for us to share documents digitally for those students who had assistive technology on their IEP’s. It was wonderful to be able to see the work that the students had done in class all in one area to reference back to instead of shuffling through piles of paper.

  • Negatives: Monitoring computer use was difficult, students love to use the computer but they also needed to know that they needed to be on google classroom and not be on other sites. The grading system was a lot different from our grading system so it was harder to give specific feedback to students. It was difficult to differentiate for the whole class, when you create an assignment the assignments went to all the students, if you wanted the students to be given work at different level you would need to create a whole new class just for those students. Many of the higher level students would finish work fast because the work given to them was differentiated too much for them. When doing group work with individual assignments students weren’t very talkative they tended to just fill out the assignment by themselves and not work with their group.

  • Overall Google Classroom has been very helpful and enjoyable to use even with the few negatives.
