Review Videos

7th Grade Math

Problem Identified: As we begin to review topics covered earlier in the year, we have noticed that the differentiation required has increased. To no one’s surprise, different kids internalized earlier lessons differently. Hypothesis: If we make a video explaining a series of released state test questions, then students will use them in ways meaningful to them, as measured by successful student homework completion. Data Collection: Without the video support, only 35% of students successfully completed a homework packet comprised of released state test questions. With the video support, 55% of students successfully completed a later, similar, homework packet. Actionable Step: You can make a video of yourself teaching to aid your instruction. Your video will allow your students to watch (and re-watch, and re-watch) as needed to acquire the targeted content. Overall Findings/Impact: I made several videos and posted them to my YouTube page (see the attached photo). Different kids used the videos differently. High performing kids didn’t want to be slowed down by the video, did the packet by themselves, and simply checked their answers at the end. Low performing kids watched the videos with heavy use of the pause button, mimicking my work step-by- step. The kids performing in the middle used a combination of these strategies, depending on their comfort with each separate prompt. Each video is being used in several different, meaningful, self-differentiated ways!
