Online HIVE Resource Library II: Engagement

7th Grade Math

Brandon Johnson & Ed Oliva

Problem Identified: We had created an Online HIVE Resource Library, which was working well, but now wanted to make sure that the “right” students were using it. In other words, we wanted to make sure that mid-level performers were using the tool to demonstrate actual learning. It would be problematic if the tool was being used exclusively by top performers (seeking perfection), or by bottom performers who were trying to “work” the system by not paying attention in class, and then using HIVE upgrades to attempt to improve their scores without real learning.

Hypothesis: If we make an online library of material students can use to improve their Hive grades, the percentage of students that self-select to improve their Hive grades will increase, as measured by the number of Hive upgrade submissions we receive.

Data Collection: Analyzing the over 100 successfully completed Hive upgrades, we

determined that the vast majority being completed are by mid-level performers.

Actionable Step: You can create assessments linked to specific Learning Outcomes and post them to your class website. You can make videos (or link to videos) explaining how to do the relevant topics. Students can watch the videos to learn, and do the assessments (including during Intensive periods) to demonstrate mastery.

Overall Findings/Impact: A system that allows students to self-select to improve their mastery ratings at any time can be meaningful employed to engage students.
