Problem Identified: We recognized that while some students were taking advantage of our classroom being open during lunch for independent upgrades, it was the same group of students across classes who were making use of that resource. We wanted to find a way to encourage more students to upgrade independently during lunch.
Hypothesis: If we create a publicly available schedule of learning outcomes to upgrade and use Quizziz as the method of testing then student mastery will increase as measured by Quizziz data.

Actionable Step: In order to use this tech tool in your classroom, we recommend you follow the steps below:
First, identify a specific block of time over which you would like to use Quizizz to upgrade (we set aside a full month before the end of the year)
Identify learning outcomes that a large number of students have yet to show mastery, or possibly ones where you do not have enough HIVE data
Assign one learning outcome per lunch period
Post a calendar in your classroom for students to be able to see all dates and learning outcomes that will be offered (we split our time up so students knew they could come for the entire period to practice before hand, or they could come just for the Quizizz in the second half)
Spend time in class to announce how the Quizizz upgrades will work and allow students to ask questions about the process
Promote the Quizizz on your regular class slides and shout out students who upgraded during the week (on slides or on a chart in your classroom)
Overall Findings/Impact: Overall, we found that this tool was somewhat successful. The integration of a technology platform that students really enjoy and are familiar with into independent upgrading attracted a few students who were not previously using lunch upgrade time. Not only did it bring them up once, but these students came to multiple Quizizz upgrades. We were able to have them practice when they came up, before starting the Quizizz halfway through the lunch period which allowed us 1:1 check-ins that normally do not happen during full class upgrade weeks. It was also an easy way for us to manage grading with less paperwork and remote access to their scores online.
The structure also helped kids to organize their time. Some students find it difficult to look at the hive, identify which learning outcomes then pick specific ones to practice and upgrade. Giving them a hard timeline for specific learning outcomes simplifies that process for those student who have that difficulty.
In order to make it more successful in the future, we can do a better job of advertising which days are Quizizz upgrades (had a note on class slides M, W, F) and shouting out students who were doing those upgrades in class. We could possibly have an intercom announcement and send an email blast to students when Quizizz upgrades are happening, though we still want students to primarily make use of the resources themselves.
