HIVE Upgrades, Anytime and Anywhere!

7th Grade Math

Mr. Brandon

Problem Identified:

● “HIVE Upgrades” are essential to the learning process fostered by Mastery-Based Grading.

● “Upgrade weeks” are great, but we wanted to create a way for kids to “upgrade” whenever and wherever they chose.

● We thought this would increase engagement in mastery upgrades, which would increase content knowledge.

Hypothesis:

● If we make an online library of class notes, including completed sample mastery checks, then

students will be able to demonstrate mastery on learning outcomes they failed to perform well on during unit tests, as measured by their performance on Hive upgrades.

Data Collection: ● We used our website to organize class notes under each Learning Outcome taught.

● Once a “headline score” was posted for a Learning Outcome in the Hive (i.e., after a unit test), students were invited to review the HIVE to see the Learning Outcomes scored an “Approaching” or a “Not Yet”.

● Students were they invited to review our class notes and attempt to show mastery on a “Google Form” quiz linked to our website.

● If a student scored 5/5 on the quiz, we would upgrade the HIVE. ● Students could resubmit as necessary to show mastery (the correct answers were not displayed when students submitted their quizzes). ● Thus far, 383 quizzes taken and 147 L.O.s upgraded.

● This means that (i) kids are engaged in the process (we don’t require upgrades), and (ii) they are learning (they get questions wrong, show grit, try again, and succeed).

Actionable Step: ● You can create an online library of class notes and post them to your class website.

● You can create “Google form” quizzes and post them to your class website.

● Students can review the notes and take the quizzes, which can be used as evidence of mastery.

Overall Findings/Impact: ● A system that allows students to self-select to improve their mastery ratings at any time can be

meaningful employed to engage students.
