Problem Identified: I noticed that the quality of students written responses wasn’t up to par with their computational skills. I wanted to help raise the quality of their written responses to meet their high level of work.
Hypothesis: If I provide feedback on different mathematical practices (as opposed to content based learning outcomes, then will students improve their quality of written responses as measured by a created mathematical practice rubric and data stored on a personal class website.
Data Collection: Mathematical Practice Rubric and Student Grading Sheets dropped in with photos.
Actionable Step: Use the Mathematical Practice rubric or design a strategy based rubric for you subject. Spend time talking about the rubric and make sure students understand how it works. Provide written and verbal feedback along with next steps. Continue to conference with students.
Overall Findings/Impact: I think it has been successful. There has been an increase in the quality of writing. Students have been able to show an improvement in mathematical Practice 2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively and Practice 3: Construct a viable argument and critique the reasoning of others. This is something I will continue to use in the future .
