8th Grade Algebra

Jared Sutton

Problem Identified: A subgroup of the Algebra 1 student population regularly struggled to realistically identify their levels of progress within the mastery-based rating scale for “I can isolate a variable in a linear equation,” after having completed an assessment for that outcome.

Hypothesis: If I produce videos/documents that show exemplify performance at each of the four Mastery levels, then students will be able to better self-assess their level of growth, as measured by the differences in their self-assessment ratings and my ratings of their growth.

Data Collection: Organizer marking self-assessment ratings against my ratings immediately after quickly ratable assessments.

Actionable Step: Many students at 442 have grown comfortable using mathematics tutorial videos to supplement their discussion and task-initiated learning. They are flexible in receiving diverse online materials for a classroom learning experience.

Overall Findings/Impact: After students viewed exemplar ShowMe videos for “I can isolate a variable in a linear equation,” the students’ self-assessment ratings averaged nearly 76%, up from roughly 47% at the beginning of data collection.
