Problem Identified: Students possess a broad range of math abilities, but are generally expected to learn new concepts at the same pace. Many students are unable to develop deep conceptual understanding of all topics in a unit, and they will retain less.
Hypothesis: If a targeted group of students are assessed on a prioritized subset of learning outcomes then they will demonstrate increased class performance, as measured by mastery grades in the HIVE.
Data Collection:

Actionable Step: Review learning outcomes for your next unit. Prioritize outcomes that are most important to make progress towards grade level. Conference with identified students so they are aware of the learning outcomes to prioritize. Create and provide additional opportunities for those students to practice these outcomes. Check-in regularly and make sure assessments are aligned.
Overall Findings/Impact: Limiting the number of outcomes to assess students on was effective in raising their performance. Another positive outcome was increasing student confidence and independence. The students were more able to keep track of the outcomes they needed to focus on and their growth toward mastery. Going forward, we would like to increase flexibility in class so mini-lessons will be delivered to the groups working on the associated outcomes, allowing others to complete independent work or engage in remediation with teacher.
