The Math HW Dilemma

7th Grade Math

Ed Oliva

Problem Identified: The completion percentage for homework was not very high in math class and I wanted to see if it could be improved. HW is not counted for a grade in Mastery Based Grading and the students are aware of this.

Hypothesis: If students are given several homework choices and held accountable for its completion then the homework completion percentage for the 7th grade will increase as measured by the weekly homework completion log.

Data Collection: The completion percentage has been tracked since 10/23. In the time I have sent emails home to parents and made them aware of what the HW is, and how they can help ensure their child is completing it in a meaningful way.

Actionable Step: A grade wide email list has been made so we have access to all parents (only 5 emails are missing). Parents were responsive to the emails I sent and seemed to appreciate being kept in the loop.

Overall Findings/Impact: Overall, there was little difference in the HW completion rate when parents were made aware of whether or not their child is doing the HW. The students that did not complete the HW prior to parent-emails being sent showed little to no improvement in their completion percentage after the emails were sent. Students that did their HW prior to the parent-emails being sent continued to do so.

Results: 701(43%), 702(44%), 703(34.5%)
