Upgrading in 6th Grade Math
6th Grade Math

Problem Identified: Students who were receiving Approaching on their work were confused about what they needed to do in order to bump up to a Meeting. They didn’t quite understand why they were getting the approaching rather than the meeting.
Hypothesis: If 6th grade math implements an alternate Mastery Based Grading (1-5 scale) then students will have a better understanding of their mastery as measured by their improvement on an upgrade assignment.
Data Collection:

Actionable Step: Teachers could implement a new 1-5 rubric in their classes for projects. There should be a concrete explanation and examples of what each grade would look like.
Overall Findings/Impact: There wasn’t an overwhelming success in using this rubric. I think this may be, because the sixth graders are still getting used to the new Mastery Based Grading, and throwing another rubric at them only confuses them more than helps them.
