UDL in 7th Grade Science

Problem Identified: Previous unit projects were dictated by the teachers, allowed for one means of demonstrating mastery, and some students struggled to do so.
Hypothesis: If we provide options for demonstrating mastery across several modalities then fewer students will struggle to achieve mastery as measured by increases in percentages of students earning Ms.
Plans for UDL Strategy Implementation: We created a research project that allows for students to find their own credible sources, which could include video as well as text, hopefully increasing buy-in to the content. We are also offering groups options for demonstration of learning: they can choose to create an informational poster, a slide presentation, an essay, or an informational video. We hope offering the options across modalities will allow.
Actionable Step: The biggest step in implementing this UDL strategy is creating different rubrics for the presentation product. Posters and slide shows are fairly similar, but the essay and video requirements require some adjusting. Other aspects of the rubric remain the same.
Overall Findings/Impact of a Planned UDL Strategy: Given that previous unit projects were more writing intensive, we expect this UDL strategy to be most helpful with easing the ability of ELLs to demonstrate mastery.
