Discussion Strategies in 8th Grade Science

8th Grade Science

Ken Andersen & Kerry-Ann Hinds

Problem Identified: We noticed that during notebook quick writes, Donovan was struggling to get started and produce anything and Gio was struggling to write with clarity.

Hypothesis: If we structure heterogeneous small group talk prior to notebook quick writes then students will write with greater volume and clarity as measured by work in science notebooks during evolution unit.

Data Collection: Both Donovan and Gio showed some improvement with this exercise. It was particularly useful for Gio. He has no problem writing abundantly but by talking through his ideas first he is able to write with greater clarity. Donovan remains a reluctant writer but he was engaged in the discussion protocol.

Actionable Step: Before any writing exercise you can structure a brief discussion protocol that gives students specific prompts to discuss for a short period of time. Each partner should have a different prompt so both can practice talking and listening.

Overall Findings/Impact: Using the structured discussion protocol has been an improvement over using less structured “turn and talk” protocols or going straight to writing with no initial discussion.
