Working with Small Groups in 8th Grade Computer Science

8th Grade Computer Science

Problem Identified: I chose 5 students to focus on for this inquiry process. Each of these students either has an IEP or is an English Language Learner. In their class, they are often more quiet and don't participate as often in whole class lesson formats so I wanted to work more closely with them and create more resources for them so they can become more independent.

Hypothesis: If I explicitly teach using a multi-sensory approach that focuses on Visual Thinking Strategies then my small group will show more growth on targeted learning outcomes.

Data Collection: I administered baseline assessments focusing on two major learning outcomes for our web design unit. One is for how to structure an HTML file which is a necessity to create a functioning website and the other learning outcome is about how to style your website so that it's customized to meet your preferences. After grading these assessments, I implemented my Visual Thinking Strategies in our small group focusing on note-taking, hands-on activities, and partner work:

After working on each learning outcome, students were then re-tested on their level of mastery. Please see the chart below for the findings:

Actionable Steps: Steps that any teacher can take in their classroom to work with ENL students and help them be more successful are:

  • Small group instruction

  • Five core reading elements (phonological awareness, phonics, reading fluency, VOCABULARY and comprehension)

  • Access to translation tools, graphics, charts, etc.

  • Target key vocabulary for holistic understanding

  • Modify/differentiate handouts - graphic organizers

  • Multiple means of expression

  • Direct and EXPLICIT teaching of concepts

  • Hands-on learning activities

Overall Findings/Impact: Students worked on 2 LOs. When assessed after the small group work, 0 students showed improvement for the structuring LO, but overtime, 2 students were able to show mastery. When assessed after the small group work for styling, 3 students showed improvement. Overtime, 3 students were able to show mastery of styling their websites, but 1 of the students who had previously mastered the material did not anymore. I do think the activities were helpful, but due to lack of frequency in our class meeting times and absences by some students, it was hard for them to retain what they had learned.
