Social-Emotional Development in 7th Grade ELA

7th Grade ELA

Krystianni Hills

Problem Identified: I noticed that the students in 703 were especially unkind to each other. Students would tease each other and laugh when another student was being teased. Students were also scared to take academic risks because of the backlash that they knew they would receive for being incorrect.

Hypothesis: If I teach 703 about Social Emotional Learning then students will be more respectful towards themselves, their peers, and their teachers as measured by the amount of SWIPs lost for Bullying, Defiance and Creating an Unsafe Environment.

Data Collection: Can be submitted in any visual representation (written, charts, tables, etc.)

  • Baseline Data

  • After Social Emotional Learning Lessons

Actionable Step: Here are the lessons that I implemented to explicitly teach Social Emotional Learning:

  • 703 SEL Lesson Tracker:

Overall Findings/Impact: I was successful at solving the problem because the amount of SWIPs that students from 703 lost due to Bully, Defiance, and Creating and Unsafe Environment decreased. Students have also begun to take more academic risks in class as evidenced by more students being willing to participate.
